Chancellor Dr. Heather Hulburt Norris
Chancellor, Appalachian State University

Dr. Heather Hulburt Norris became chancellor of Appalachian State University on March 1, 2025, after having served as interim chancellor of App State since April 19, 2024. With more than two decades of academic leadership, vision and expertise at App State, Chancellor Norris’ career has been characterized by her strong, collaborative leadership and service to both App State and the greater community. Prior to her appointments as chancellor and interim chancellor, Norris served as provost and executive vice chancellor of App State — on an interim basis in 2020 and fully in 2021.

Board of Trustees

The Appalachian State University Board of Trustees is a thirteen-member body that promotes the development of the institution within the functions prescribed by the UNC Board of Governors. The board serves as advisor to the Board of Governors on matters pertaining to the University and also serves as advisor to the chancellor concerning the management and development of Appalachian. The powers and duties of the Board of Trustees are primarily defined and delegated by the Board of Governors.

Board of Visitors

Appalachian State University's Board of Trustees has created a 30-member Board of Visitors to advise and assist trustees and the chancellor on public policy matters that impact the university. The board will also advise and assist with the university's fund raising activities and needs, and help communicate its mission and accomplishments.
