Update from Appalachian State University

Friday, March 15, 2024

Today, App State’s Board of Trustees met on the Boone campus. I provided updates on:

I also shared the news that Student Body President and Trustee Juan Pablo (J.P.) Neri has been selected to participate in the prestigious John Robert Lewis Scholars and Fellows Program, which fosters rising leaders beginning vocations in public service, nonprofits, education and seminary.

As one of only 20 members of the national cohort for 2024–25, J.P. will travel to our nation’s capital, participate in projects and engage in dialogue designed to effect positive change and reconcile conflict. He and the other members of his cohort will be afforded opportunities to learn from and connect with representatives from national, state, and local government, businesses, and nonprofits engaged in social impact work. The process for selection is highly competitive and we congratulate J.P. for being selected for this program.

This was J.P.’s final Board of Trustees meeting before his term ends, and we greatly appreciate his service to the university.

Congratulations are in order for Coach of the Year JohnMark Bentley and the 24th-ranked App State Wrestling Team for winning their second straight Southern Conference Championships last week. Ethan Oakley, a sophomore management major from Trinity, Cody Bond, a senior higher education major from Danielsville (GA), Tommy Askey, a senior accounting major from Pine Bush (NY), Will Miller, a junior communication studies major from Helena (AL), and Tomas Brooker, a first-year exercise science major from Harrisburg, won their individual weight classes last weekend and will compete in next week’s national championship tournament in Kansas City. For the second consecutive year, Coach Bentley was named Southern Conference Coach of the Year. Congratulations to Coach Bentley and the entire team and staff for a great season. We wish you the best of luck next week!

To celebrate our university’s 125th anniversary, we will hold events and celebrations throughout the year. The first of these events will be a kickoff celebration on Founders Plaza next Friday, March 22 — a great way to begin a fun and exciting Spring Family Weekend. I look forward to seeing our campus community enjoy these wonderful opportunities as we mark this historic time in App State’s history.
