Building Community

Appalachian believes deeply in the power of community and is well known for this relational culture. The third annual Community FEaST — a near-zero waste, locally sourced meal held earlier this week — stands as a strong visual testament to our institutional focus on community and sustainability. Attendees dined along a table 100 yards long and engaged in dialogue and storytelling about the importance of sustainable food systems. Many thanks to the faculty, staff and graduate students from AppalFRESH who organized this event.

Across the university, Mountaineers work to help build — and better — our community on and off campus. Here are just a few examples:

  • For 39 years, Staff Senate has sponsored the AppKIDS event to help provide winter clothing, hygiene products and snack food items to local children in need.
  • The Office of Sustainability recently expanded its Food Resource Hub, which was mentioned in The New York Times.
  • The Appalachian Student Government Association publishes The Wellness Times newsletter to highlight the many dimensions of wellness and key programming available for students on campus.

It is heartening to see faculty, staff and students elevate the culture of care and compassion that has flourished on this campus for more than a century.

Together, we are creating a better, brighter future for those in the Appalachian Community and far beyond.
