What a Year!

2018 – 2019

Almost 4,000 students crossed the stage last Friday and Saturday during commencement. This is an exciting and memorable time for these scholars and their families. I want to especially thank the members of our excellent faculty and staff for your passion and dedication, and for your mentorship that helped our students reach this important juncture.

How quickly this academic year passed! In August, students in the Beaver College of Health Sciences moved into Levine Hall, our newest and largest academic facility to date and the first project funded by the Connect NC Bond to be completed.

We celebrated Founders Day and the dedication of the National Pan-Hellenic Council Plots and Garden. The Appalachian Community pulled together to assist as across the state, we coped with hurricanes Florence and Michael. When a record-breaking and beautiful snowstorm blanketed the High Country, our campus again rose to the challenge, supporting one another and managing with Mountaineer resiliency.

We traveled to New Orleans and left as the Sun Belt Conference Champion, securing our fourth win in four straight bowl appearances for an undefeated bowl record.

The Appalachian Academy at Middle Fork welcomed its first group of mini-Mountaineers and this spring reported excellent end-of-year grades. The academy’s fifth graders achieved an 81% increase from their fourth grade scores on their “winter check-in” pre-assessments for the North Carolina End-of-Grade Reading Comprehension Test.

In March, a pivotal visit from the University of North Carolina Board of Governors gave us the opportunity to showcase the exciting construction and concepts developing on our campus, and illustrate the many ways we are helping shape education in our state — from kindergarten through college.

The May 2 #iBackAPP event again exemplified the lifelong support and commitment our alumni have for Appalachian, generating more than $180,000 with solid participation from our faculty, staff and students. Thank you to each member of the Appalachian Community who made the day such a tremendous success.

Whatever your summer brings — summer studies, internships, sabbaticals, new jobs or new landscapes — I wish you all the best. Thank you for another terrific year.
