Finding Balance

Take time to refresh, recharge and renew
Thursday, February 28, 2019

Appalachian students are about to take a short breather and it is well deserved. All of us utilize this time in different ways: Some will remain in the area and work or use the quiet time for research and regrouping; some will give their time and talents to an Alternative Service Experience project; some will catch a few rays, catch up with loved ones or simply catch up on sleep.

However you spend this time, I want to remind our students, especially, that faculty and staff are here for you. We fill our days thinking of ways to be better teachers and mentors; to make this campus safe, clean and beautiful; to purchase, prepare and provide good food to keep you healthy and feeling at home; and to envision and build new classrooms, more efficient residence halls, and spaces for study and quiet reflection.

A dedicated group of faculty, staff and students ensure the well-being of the Appalachian Community as a whole. Your mental and physical health and your academic success are paramount. Many of you can recount instances when you’ve reached out and found the support and help you need — I hear those stories regularly. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the services at hand, many of the myriad resources available can be found here.

Faculty and staff, your dedication is seen in the success of our students and the support you give one another. This is truly a caring, concerned community and I am thankful to be part of it.

Have a safe Spring Break and return refreshed and recharged — there’s so much more to come!
