Academic Excellence and Opportunity

Students, faculty, staff and alumni stand up, stand out
Tuesday, February 5, 2019

Because of the dedication of faculty and staff and the quality of our students, Appalachian is consistently lauded by U.S. News & World Report, The Princeton Review and many other national publications and guides.

Appalachian offers small classes; innovative, interdisciplinary and integrative curriculum; and mentorship from faculty, staff and fellow students. Opportunities abound for active learning, outreach and professional advancement.

I hear so many stories of your achievements and of alumni engagement. Some recent examples of how many of you are making a difference and contributing in this community and around the world include:

  • Two interior design students from the College of Fine and Applied Arts were recently recognized by PAVE in New York City for a retail display design.
  • Cara Hagan, assistant professor in Appalachian’s Department of Theatre and Dance, has won Best Southern States documentary at the Southern States Indie Fan Film Fest.
  • Assistant Director Ben Asma and the team in the Department of Wellness and Prevention Services have established a Collegiate Recovery Community that supports continued recovery and overall holistic well-being while in college.
  • Salisbury city manager Lane Bailey ’87 ’89 is an international volunteer, setting an example at home and in Israel, China, Denmark and Tanzania.

There are countless examples of your hard work and dedication. You are the reason we are the premier, public undergraduate institution in North Carolina. We have much to be proud of as we continue to excel in 2019.
