At its 69th annual meeting Aug. 2, the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce honored Appalachian’s solar vehicle team with its everGREEN Award for Sustainability. This is one of many examples of positive exchange between ‘town and gown.’ We are fortunate to share common values with the chamber, local business and the greater Boone community.
- The Boone Town Council and the Watauga County Board of Commissioners have adopted resolutions calling for 100 percent clean energy and green jobs for the state of North Carolina and the United States by the year 2050.
- The Chamber of Commerce’s strategic plan prioritizes enhancing the quality of education in our community and building links between educational institutions and employers.
In turn, Appalachian is committed to this community. Through community outreach efforts such as Appalachian and the Community Together and our Civic Engagement Program, our students, faculty and staff work with community partners in a myriad of ways.
Our volunteer and educational efforts positively impact area schools, health care, agriculture, the elderly and quality of life.
We also are supportive of the area’s economic mission. In 2017 alone, Appalachian’s Small Business Technology Development Center provided almost 3,500 hours of free counseling, assisted clients in starting 14 new businesses and obtained over $10 million in loans and equity investments.
Together, through collaboration and partnership, we have created a close-knit community of Mountaineers that embraces and nurtures residents, faculty, staff and students.
