Appalachian Connections
August 2018

Message from Chancellor Sheri Everts

Student move-in is only days away. We are excited to welcome our first-year students and those who have been away for summer.

As we start the new academic year, I’d like to share two innovative programs that promise new career opportunities for our students.

Appalachian recently launched a Police Development Program, which prepares students to become certified police officers in North Carolina. Ours is the only university other than Indiana University, which piloted the program, to offer this type of opportunity. The program promises to change the face of policing and provide job opportunities for a new cadre of young police officers.

The fermentation sciences program was inaugurated in 2013 and has grown exponentially in scope and size. Originally housed as an interdisciplinary program within the College of Arts and Sciences, it is now part of the newly renamed A.R. Smith Department of Chemistry and Fermentation Sciences. Graduates are landing positions ranging from the head cider maker and distiller at an apple farm to a manufacturing associate who is formulating flu vaccines.

I’d like to extend an invitation now to our Founders Day Celebration, Sept. 5. This will become a yearly tradition that honors our founders, the Dougherty brothers and Lillie Shull Dougherty, and celebrates more than 100 years of preparing students to be engaged and informed global citizens.
