Appalachian Assets

Eight reasons to celebrate, investigate, participate
Wednesday, August 30, 2017

As we move into the holiday weekend, let’s celebrate a few of the great things our amazing university has accomplished and has to offer:

  1. About 3,300 new first year students and 1,300 transfer students joined our community this fall, many of whom gathered at Kidd Brewer Stadium following Convocation for the photo above which, by the way, had more hits on social media than any AppState post ever;

  2. As of Tuesday, Aug. 29, Appalachian is one of only 35 institutions nationwide to earn the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education’s (FIRE) “green light” rating for protecting student and faculty free speech;

  3. An array of seasoned leaders (including nine new deans), faculty and staff primed to guide, teach and learn alongside the largest and most diverse campus population ever;

  4. An amazing cadre of new and returning scholarship students – from ACCESS to Wilson – eager to expand their horizons and ours;

  5. More than 400 clubs and organizations to challenge and engage our students to become effective contributors to our community;

  6. A comprehensive campus safety and wellness program with resources and professionals available for students, faculty and staff;

  7. A campus committed to sustainable living that goes far beyond recycling and solar panels (Prepare to think and act more sustainably!);

  8. A university-operated Food Services committed to providing affordable, local, healthy food and a Bake Shop dishing up amazing cakes, pies and cookies.

P.S. We had so many requests for the “No Hate App State” stickers we shared during move-in that we printed a second batch. Pick one (or more) up for free at the welcome and information desks in Plemmons Student Union.
